Why Wisdom Teeth Are Extracted:
1. Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, typically emerge in late adolescence or early adulthood. Many people do not have enough space in their mouths to accommodate these extra teeth, leading to various dental problems, such as impaction (when the tooth cannot fully emerge), crowding, pain, and infection. In such cases, extraction becomes necessary.
2. Preparation: Before the extraction, your dentist or oral surgeon will conduct a thorough examination, which may include X-rays, to assess the position of your wisdom teeth and determine the best approach for removal.
3. Anesthesia: Wisdom tooth extractions are usually performed under local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. In some cases, general anesthesia or sedation may be used to ensure comfort and relaxation during the procedure.
4. Extraction Procedure: The dentist or oral surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue, if needed, to access the tooth. They may need to divide the tooth into smaller pieces for easier removal. Once the tooth is extracted, the area is typically sutured closed.
5. Recovery: After the procedure, it’s important to follow post-operative care instructions provided by your dentist. You may experience some swelling, pain, and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medications and cold compresses. It’s crucial to stick to a soft diet and avoid strenuous activities during the initial recovery period.
